What is a Petfishing scam?
“Petfishing” is an increasingly common scam! The term “Petfishing” comes from “Catfishing”, which refers to unscrupulous pet sellers on the market who post misleading or false pet information online to lure buyers into purchasing pets that may have health problems or do not match the advertised breed or description.

Common examples
Online advertisements for cats and dogs often feature low prices and appealing photos, which can easily mislead buyers into falling for scams. With a slight misstep, buyers may end up with a pet that is weak or sickly, or even at risk of premature death. Buyers should be wary of advertisements claiming “home-bred,” “paid adoption,” or “affordable price”. Falling for these scams can lead to financial losses and emotional trauma, with no guarantee of the petโs health and welfare!
